For my final outcome design I decided to create a dress based on the theme of ‘My town’. The dress was a negative portrayal of ‘My Town’ which is Chatham. The dress itself was made out of bandage on the top half, the bandages were painted grey with a poem I had written stitched in white to resemble road markings. The bandage was then attached to the tailors dummy in a bandage dress style; this style would hopefully attract and intrigue the age group of 13-19 year olds as the bandage dress is currently in catwalk and high street fashion. The bottom of the dress was originally going to have a caged style skirt in the shape of a tutu but due to the wire being too weak and flimsy it did not have enough strength in itself to hold itself up. I had to change the idea again halfway through the production of the outcome but the sudden change worked out for the best as it meant that I had to attach the top and bottom of the wire to the tailors dummy giving me the idea of curving the wire and attaching cling film in between each wire panel giving the appearance of a bubble; this linked itself back to the quote about the Princes Park bubble. The change made it more appropriate to the message of the dress tying in the message of wanting to leave Princes Park and Chatham but not being able to and feeling trapped. I kept the underlay of the dress the same attaching scrap material and bottles to the outcome to show diversity in the community and how people drown their sorrows instead of looking for hope and inspiration elsewhere.
The exhibition went extremely well and the group pulled together and worked together brilliantly appearing to of learnt from the mistakes we made as a group at the last exhibition. Together we set up the exhibition by hanging black drapes and lights that I had borrowed from the pub and Julia had brought from home. We also all helped one another transporting outcomes and setting up and those of us who could drive offering to bring down outcomes.
Once the audience had arrived all throughout the night everyone received positive feedback. Unlike the last exhibition all of us stayed throughout the entire exhibition ensuring that no one could touch or destroy any work like last time. I personally feel the exhibition went really and I thoroughly enjoyed myself unlike last time.
The strengths of the exhibition included good teamwork and communication, excellent organisation skills, being able to learn from the last exhibition and also being able to confront any problem with maturity.
I feel the weaknesses in the exhibition were poor communication with members of staff from the Brook and lack of advertising. If I could change anything about the exhibition it would be to get the advertising sorted quicker.
I received really positive feedback from my clients as well as my audience. I got feedback by leaving a little notebook for comments from the general public. Most of my audience and my clients felt that I had portrayed ‘My Town’ in a unique and creative way using a variety of disciplines such as text, textiles, design, installation and found objects.
